What is employee engagement and why is it so important?

We are on an exciting journey to make Stony Brook Medicine an even greater place to work, grow our careers and provide excellence in skilled and compassionate patient care.

In order for us to support our mission and vision at Stony Brook Medicine, we have made a strong commitment to build and nurture a culture of employee engagement. Past survey results revealed low engagement among both faculty and staff. The satisfaction and engagement of our employees, both faculty and staff are extremely important to us. Engaged employees feel more involved, committed, passionate and empowered. Essentially, they enjoy what they do, and demonstrate this in their performance and commitment to others and the organization. Further, research shows that employee engagement has a direct impact on both the quality of care and the patient experience.

It's important to keep in mind that employee engagement is an ongoing journey. Together we are building greater awareness of the needs and strategies to foster engagement, and will do ongoing action planning at the organizational and team levels to address engagement challenges. We will continue to develop and refine tools and strategies that drive engagement.
